COMMUNICATION

Communication tends to be the #1 cited issue across organizations and industries.

This trend is bound to continue tripping up human systems. How did you learn to communicate? Communication is taught through many systems: family, friends, community, public, school, and work environments. There seems to be different rules of communication wherever we go. It’s a wonder any of us say what we truly mean.

So, why address it?

Our environments change, but we stay the same. Our values, beliefs, wants, and needs are core to us. Collections of individuals make up organizations and its culture. We need their diverse knowledge, skills, and abilities to achieve the organization’s mission. It all happens through communication.

There are tools to help you get clear on what you have to say and how to follow-up when it goes poorly—because it will.

Invest in communication and here is how it will impact your organization: reduce errors, minimize assumptions, use time effectively, increase diversity, increase transparency, increase trust, strengthen personal relations.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

There are formal leaders and informal leaders. Perhaps you are one. Perhaps you know one. Formal leaders are those designated by position to lead a team of people. Informal leaders are those who have high influence in an organization based on their way of being. They both have impact.

The role of leader is also evolving. As Millennials comprise more of the workforce than any other generation (35%, Pew Research Center, 2017), their presence requests more of a coach than a boss. As workplaces shift, will you? What is your leadership style? It influences your decision-making, your communication, your priorities, and how you get things done. And the big question: How effective is your leadership style?

Feedback can come in many forms: assessments, reviews, and goal attainment. Are you getting the clear, specific feedback you need? Most leaders don’t receive the “straight talk” they need for fear of retribution.

Methods are available to clarify your style, receive feedback, and implement results. The most important factor is your willingness—are you willing?

Invest in leadership development and here is how it will impact your organization: efficiently meet organizational goals, grow leaders, culture shift, increase employee engagement, effective productivity.

TEAM FUNCTIONING

Teams assemble and disband based on organizational need. The need becomes the task or focus of a group. How the group reaches the goal can be as unique as its members.

Some will say it doesn’t matter how a group reaches its goal, as long as the goal is met. This single-minded thinking can create interpersonal residue that lingers. Perhaps you’ve sensed it. Perhaps it has become part of the culture as a set of invisible rules, such as, person C cannot work with person H. Or, person B must always be in charge. This is not merely a culture impact. It is an organizational cost. In a micro sense, the costs are hurdles, withholding information, lack of coordination—all of which use valuable time. In a macro sense, the costs affect employee engagement, retention, and how well you can meet the needs of your customer.

High-performing teams are the ultimate goal. They can work towards the task and address roadblocks quickly and effectively as they emerge. They also value differences, consider alternatives, and resolve interpersonal issues.

There are many ways our team experience can shape our work once we are through. Invest in developing an optimum team experience up front and not pay organizational costs later.

Invest in team functioning and here is how it will impact your organization: clear timelines, clear processes, meet goals effectively, strengthen personal relations, increase trust.

ONE MORE THING...

These three investment areas speak to the internal impact on organizations. Any investment then ripples out into your client/customer base. They will yield: enhanced customer service, increased or higher quality offerings, trust with your organization, market agility, client/customer engagement, brand ambassadors.
